Week 9 Thing 23

Yeah, the last one. There were many, many times that I thought I would never make it all the way to the end. It has been a great learning experience. There were so many "firsts" for me. From listening to podcasts to viewing something on YouTube. All of the "things" were new to me. I'm very proud of myself for being able to complete the program. The self-paced aspect was helpful. Also having other staff to share trials, triumphs and just fun stuff with was great. It was a good team building project. At least at Perry Hall, there was a group of us, that encouraged each other, and would check on progess. What thing are you on now? Maybe a little competition also, none of us wanted to be left behind. I have friends that work at HCPL, and they were doing it also. It was fun finding their blogs and adding comments.

WOULD THIS BE A GOOD TIME TO LET YOU KNOW THAT AT HCPL, EVERY STAFF PERSON WHO FINISHED THE PROGRAM WAS GIVEN AN IPOD. HINT, HINT.
I'm sure that the prizes in our drawing will be even better than that.

Reading other people's blog was interesting, and trying to figure out who was who. There were some really interesting ones.

I would be interested in doing another discovery project. It provided the frame work, to make me stretch myself and try new things that I would not have on my own. Most of the discovery things I had never hear of and would not have found them on my own.

Week 9 Thing 22

I established an overdrive account. I was surprised at the varity and number of titles available. I was sad to learn that I can not use an ipod to download items. I was most interested in being able to download and then listen on the go. I don't see the point in downloading to your home computer. I guess I don't spend enough time on the computer to listen to something while I work.
On a related subject, I'm dissapointed in the decline of Talking Books on Cas. I listen to them in the car to and from work. Not everyone has a CD player in their vehicle. I will have in look into what is available for download to an ipod.
On a happier note, one more thing to go.

week 9 Thing 21

I found that a lot of the podcasts required additional software downloads, so I didn't use those. Podcast.net and Podcastalley.com both required additional software. Yahoo Podcasts was the easiest to use. Some of the podcast were really boring. I found one that was 38 minutes long, no I didn't listen for very long. It was a cooking chat between 5 chefs from different cities. They lost me before they were finished introducting themselves.
I ended up adding the RSS feed for www.dogcastradio.com. It is a british radio program on dog training and well, really anything dog.
I'm starting to see the end in sight, just two more "things". Of course the end of the month is also coming in to sight. So many things, so little time.
Until next time.

Week 9 Thing 20

Youtube was way fun. I did feel a little guilty since we are not letting customers use youtube. But I got over that. What bandwidth problem. I picked this video because I thought it was funny. I started to put the Sneaks Summer Reading Trip on my blog, but someone else on the staff said they were going to use that one. I didn't want to copy, besides the dogs were funny.

Week 8 Thing 19

OK this is getting fun now. I checked out Yelp. Got ideas for places to go on vacation. Best places to eat and stay. Looked up several cities, also had links to services etc. I also played around with Arcaplay, a free gaming site. I'm not much of a gamer so did poorly. Found a game between a cat and a dog. As the dog I threw bones over the fence and tried to hit the cat. The cat (controlled by the computer) was throwing garbage out of a can over the fence. Let's just say the cat won.

Week 8 Thing 18

WOW I exported my test page using Zoho's publish options. WooYoo. Lots of fun. Still miles of things to go before I rest. The month is flying by and I still want to win a prize.

test Document

This is a test document to see what features are available. I will take a look around and see what I find. I will change the color as I go. This can be fun.  Some  colors are  better than others. They are all good in their own way.kiss  Some features are more helpful than others.  I do like color.  This is the first cool day. May be the start of fall. This was been fun, but now I must move on,

Week 7 Thing 17

I went to the sandbox (kinda sounds like I'm a cat) and played around. It was fun adding comments to some of the wikis. I posted my blog on the Favorite Blogs page. The instructions could have been a little clearer. But I got there. Time is flying by, so many more things and so litte time. I will need to speed it up, to win a prize.

Week 7- Thing 16

Wikis- I do tend to use Wikipedia if it comes up when I'm searching for something. So far I have not gotten bad information. So it works. While I was exploring Wikis, I checked out the Bull Run Library. They have a service that for $20 a month they will send you 3 books, after you read or whatever two of them you send back two and get two new ones. There are no late fees and no shipping charges. But wait, you are paying $20 a month for this service. Is is possible that you are in fact paying for shipping and late fees up front. Interesting.
I also liked Book Lovers Wiki, a good source for reviews.

Week 6 Thing 15

After reading the perspectives listed for the discovery exercises, I'm not convinced that 2.0 will change the world as we know it. I don't think that 5 years from now libraries will be substantially different. It's kinda scary to think of teaching machines, and machines using people.

Week 6- Thing 14

Technorati- the best part was the link to Miss Teen USA 2007 from South Carolina's Video. The most hits this week. It does look like a quick way to find out what is hot, right now. It is always changing.
So on to other news, What about them O's. IS that sad or what.

Week 6- Thing 13

Well I looked at the tutorial, the replacement since the other is still disabled, it was OK. I'm not getting a lot out of Del.icio.us. Maybe I just not that interested in looking into other people's filing cabinets. I did check out some bookmarked sites, it was interesting but not something I think I will really use.

Week 5- Thing 12

After two days, or at least an hour or two out of two days, I have posted my rollyo on my blog. Creating the rollyo was not very hard, but somehow I messed up and had trouble getting it on my blog and working correctly. Don't ask what I did, cause I'm not sure. I'm finding that the "things" are taking longer as we move on.
I'm also having fun checking out other blogs and leaving comments. I even found a friend's blog who works for HCPL and is also doing 23 things. Blog reading can become habit forming.

Week 5 Thing 11

This was so much fun. One of the titles I added to my list had 6390 other member posts. Another title only had 3 other member posts. I read a wide range of stuff. It really has been fun learning all of these new things.

Week 5 - Thing 10

Yahoo! Avatars U.K. & Ireland

After I created my avatar I wanted to move it to my blog. I used Yahoo Avatars to create my little farm me.

Week 4- Thing 9 I spend some time on MERLIN, just looking around. What is the big deal with second life. I can't find all the time I need for my first life. How does anyone have time for a second life. I did have lots of fun creating my Avatar. I (it) whoever, even has a pet rooster. Way Cool stuff. I think I need to go shopping for more stuff for me? it? whoever?.

Week 4- Thing 8- First off the podcast doesn't seem to be working. has anyone else noticed this?
I set up by bloglines account. I was trying to select the feeds that I wanted, didn't realize that I was making selections and ended up with lots of feeds. I had to go back and edit and delete the ones I didn't want. I'm still checking out some and may edit as I go until I find the ones I really want to keep. It was interesting to explore and view all the choices.

Week 3- Thing 7- Something technology related.
I guess the biggest thing this week has been the new iphone. Not something I will be running out to get. I don't really see what the big deal is. I do have a new cell phone, with a real minute program. Unlike my first phone that had 10 free minutes a month. And now that I can call anywhere anytime, I do find that I use it alot. More than I ever thought I would. But do I need to watch movies, surf the net, and take picture on a phone with a tiny screen. I think not. I happened to be out at a shopping area the day they went on sale, I saw this long line of people waiting and then I realized what they were doing. Some of them had been in line for over 5 hours. This was in Harford County, not a big city location. I just don't get it.

Week 3- Thing 6 Flicke fun. I started playing around with Flickr, found Flickr Colr Pickr. You can get different images and change their color. That led me to Flickr Chia Pet. Where you can "draw" on an image and have it "grow" before your eyes. It was pretty cool. Then I found a site where you can make your own Kaleidoscope. Using jpeg you can create a downloadable picture. I will try and post the picture on my blog. Speaking of posting pictures, after I got help from one of our CAs on Monday. I came back on Tuesday and posted a picture all by myself. Very cool stuff. It is a picture of my dance group performing during the Saint Patricks day parade in Baltimore.
Week 3- Thing 5 Alright I set up my yahoo account and then set up my flickr account. Then I wasn't sure what to do, so I ask one of the CAs for help. Justin walked me through adding a picture. The sunset picture.

Week 2, Thing 4- Register your blog and track your progress.
After I had registered my blog, it was fun to see it listed amoung the other participants' blogs.
I have been exploring and checking out some of my c0-workers blogs. And now I'm in the running for the big prizes.
Week 2, Thing 3 Setting up the blog- It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. If I can do it anybody can do it. It did take longer than 3 minutes, but not too much more.
Week 1- Thing 2, Pointers from Lifelong learners. In my test post I covered the easiest and hardest habits, or at least what I feel will be for me. It may change as I progress with the program. One thing that I have discovered in logging in to Blogger is that you have to included the entire e-mail address. I guess we are so spoiled in bcpl in that we don't have to use the whole address in our e-mail program. When doing my test post, and after getting many messages telling me my username was incorrect. I figured out what I was doing wrong. Good you say. Until the next time I tried to make a post and made the same mistake. Now I think I finally got it right.
Week 1- Thing 1 Introduction to the Program- It was interesting to read about the history of the program and the reasons behind it. It was also the first time I had listened to a Podcast. I'm sure there will be many more "firsts" for me as I go through the program.

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Alright it is week 2 and I have just finished creating my blog. It did take a tad longer than 3 minutes. Give me a break. But now it is done and I am happy.
Addressing the 7 1/2 habits of highly successful lifelong learners. I think the hardest for me will be Habit 3: View problems as challenges. I think I view problems as well, problems. I have faced the challenge of creating my blog, and so far I think I am ahead.
The easy one seems to be Habit: 7 to teach/mentor others. Even though I don't feel totally sure about what I am doing at this point. I have shown two other staff member how to get started. I am looking forward to learning together and having fun.
